Happy Halloween, sweet friends!
What are your favorite Halloween traditions? Though we usually partake in fun school parties and parades, as well as trick-or-treating with our dear friends, we have never had a “Trunk or Treat” experience! Not only was that statement about to change this year, we also signed up to decorate our own trunk for the festivities. The students at my daughter’s school are dressing up in their costumes and, as they show them off to fellow peers and parents, they will be able to visit several parents and members of the PTO that adorned their trunks to give out treats!
I let my daughter pick the theme for our trunk and she was adamant in her choice of the classic Halloween cartoon “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”. Good grief! We decided to re-create the pumpkin patch with Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin, along with the other characters dressed up in their trick-or-treating costumes. To keep the budget at a minimum, we found some super inexpensive plastic pumpkins at Target and added burlap as both the lining of the trunk for a rustic feel, as well as fillers for the pumpkin bins that did not contain candy. To add a bit more color, I added some Fall fabric placemats and faux leaves I found at The Dollar Tree. With poster and foam board, I cut and painted Linus and the iconic welcome sign and finished it all off with an adorable Charlie Brown-inspired banner by the amazing Piggy Bank Parties!
To make the little ghost trick-or-treaters, my husband and I used chicken wire left over from our Mother Hen Brunch to form the structures. I chose a white felt fabric due to its thickness that would aid in hiding the wire silhouette and hold up their forms. The eyes were cut out of black felt and backed with an adhesive Velcro to easily adhere to the ghosts. Of course, Charlie Brown’s costume would have a few more holes than the rest! Each ghost is holding up their trick-or-treating bags tied with pipe cleaners, bearing another small banner and little word bubbles {again, by the fabulous Piggy Bank Parties!}, disclosing what goodies they received. Poor Chuck… always gets a rock! I mean really, who gives out rocks to children?! 😉
I hope the kiddos at school enjoy our trunk-or-treating decorations! My daughter is very excited to share it with her friends, in addition to the many festivities and two costume changes taking place today! I also can’t wait to trick or treat with my little Lalaloopsy doll and wish you and your family a happy and safe Halloween! ♥
Merci Beaucoup!

My son and daughter are actually Linus and Sally for Halloween this year! I posted pics on my FB page of them all dressed up with the exception of Sally wearing pink instead of blue (couldn’t find a blue dress). I am borrowing your idea for our Church’s Truck or Treat and with my kiddos all dressed up helping pass out candy, it’s sure to be a hit! Thanks for the fun and cute idea!!!

I’m going to have to use this for my church’s trunk or treat! Awesome idea!
Jamie says
where did you get the burlap?
Lynlee says
Jamie ~ I usually purchase my burlap from Joann fabric and craft stores! 🙂
Theresa says
I’m having trouble making the little ghosts.. any tips or maybe a picture of the chicken wire under the felt? Any help would be appreciated!!!
Lynlee says
Theresa — I took a large roll of chicken wire, rolled it into a cylinder and attached the sides all the way up to the top. I then folded the top inward towards the center and rounded it out as much as I could to look like a head. Does that make sense? If you still need help, e‑mail me at lynlee@lynlees.com and I will send you a photo! 🙂

Hi Lynlee, If I email you would you mind sending me the picture of how you made the ghosts? This trunk is so awesome!!
Lynlee says
No problem! I received your e‑mail and sent it to you! Good luck! 🙂

Hi!! I absolutely love this!! How much white felt fabric did you purchase? Where did you buy your chicken wire? What did you use to make the dark markings on the “I got a quarter ghost”
Thank you in advance!! Our church trunk or treat event is this Sunday
Lynlee says
Thank you so much, Marcy! As far as the felt fabric goes, depending on the size of your ghosts, you’ll probably need approximately 3 yards for each. I purchased the chicken wire at a local feed store and I used paint to mark up the dirt on the Pig Pen character! I hope this helps! 🙂

I just love this idea. I am going to try this for our annual Church Trunk of Treat.
question. how many yards of burlap did you use and did you have it reaching all the way to the ground? I have a reg, suv, chevy equinox.
Lynlee says
Hi Patricia! Thank you so much! I used about two to three yards of burlap and no, it didn’t go all the way to the ground. I just wanted it to cover the trunk and bunched it quite a bit to give it some dimension. Hope this helps! 🙂
Patricia says
Thank you. Helped a lot. 🙂 Did you hot glue the leaves? what exactly did you use for the ghost? I was thinking of sheets.
Melody says
How much chicken wire is used on each ghost figure? How wide did you make the cylinder shape for the ghost bodies?
Thanks! Just Adorable!
Lynlee says
Thank you so much, Melody! I would say maybe about a yard each? I just rolled the chicken wire into itself and attached the two ends, then rounded out the top for the heads. Hope this helps! 🙂
Denene says
How did you draw or make Linus?? I am having trouble with this..
Lynlee says
I actually drew Linus free hand on a cream colored poster board {first with pencil, then over with a permanent marker}, then I traced it over a foam board to make it sturdier and adhered them together. Hope this helps! 🙂
