A few months ago, I was contacted by Yanira Anglada from Cake Therapy who so graciously invited me to participate in a sugar artist collaboration to celebrate Universal Children’s Day in the form of cupcakes! I was immediately on board and was over the moon when I was assigned the city of Rio de Janeiro in my native country of Brazil. As you may remember, we threw my mom a Let Me Take You to Rio party last year and I was super excited to revisit the theme and transform it into fondant!
Forty-six artists took on the task of representing their appointed cities from around the world, utilizing six cupcakes as our canvas. Thus, It’s a Small World: A Tribute to Children from Around the Globe was born!
Then came time to sketch out the design to reflect such a beautiful city on merely six cupcakes! The elements I knew I wanted to include were vibrant colors {especially green and yellow to coordinate back to the country’s flag}, recognizable landmarks and an overall beachy feel. My final composition included the Christ the Redeemer {Cristo Redentor} statue on Corcovado and the hillside shanty towns {favelas}, the macaw {arara} as a Carnaval float, the country’s beloved love of soccer {futebol} and the iconic Copacabana sidewalk and sea of umbrellas on the beach.
Since the collaboration was originated to celebrate and recognize children, our own kiddos were also invited to contribute their own renderings of our assigned cities. This is my daughter’s portrayal of Rio!
It was such an amazing honor to have been invited to participate in such an incredibly meaningful project and I am truly humbled to have been featured alongside such talented artists. I strongly encourage you to view the entire showcase of gorgeous works of art on the official Facebook page and especially the Meet the Artists album to find out more about the talent behind each city’s representation!
Merci Beaucoup!
