Viva Las Vegas! Last November, my incredible grandmother celebrated her 90th birthday!!! What an amazing milestone! Everyone who meets her cannot believe her age because she looks so young, but also because she can usually be found partying it up at the Vegas casinos! Due to her affinity for gambling, we decided to celebrate with a casino-themed party and dessert table! Since we had planned an entire weekend of fun, including a couple of nights at the Palms Casino Resort, we set up the desserts in her room and surprised her with it.
Here are the details…
For the background, I wanted to write her name, Lucia, in marquee letters, which can be super expensive to buy! So, I decided to make my own. I purchased paper mache letters, red spray paint and gold and round Christmas ornaments {I lucked out since it was close to the holidays!} from craft stores. After punching holes in the front of the letters with a screwdriver, I inserted the gold ornaments to resemble lights. Most of the ornaments were secure enough, but I did hot glue a couple that weren’t as stable.
To create the paper products, I purchased digital clip art from the Etsy shop revidevi and created cupcake toppers {not fondant… can you believe it?!}, decor and buffet labels, which I added to a gold sparkly chevron background. Lollipop dice were displayed inside souvenir shot glasses, pastries were placed on playing card-shaped dishes and Las Vegas ash trays were propped up as additional decorations on easels.
I was inspired by dice vases I had seen so beautifully done by Kelly Lyden of The Party Dress for an HGTV feature and decided to re-create them. Because I didn’t have square white vases, I utilized hard white felt to line the inside of clear glass ones and added round, black circles in various numbers to each side. Red and yellow carnations filled the vases and matched perfectly with the table.
Prior to our dessert bash, we took the birthday girl out on the town for dinner and celebrated Vegas-style! We are so very fortunate to have been able to partake in this incredible milestone and to have her close by in hopes that her wisdom and energy rubs off on us just a bit! ♥
Merci Beaucoup!
